Working out is not for everyone.  It takes huge discipline and dedication to put your body through a lot of physical stress on a consistent basis.  I’ve tried a lot of things from gym classes, home workouts, working out early, working out late, different combination of things.  Working out is fun especially when you see results. The hardest part is motivate yourself to workout ad actually getting up to do it.

I have lots of things on my list. I have 3 kids, husband, home to maintain, job, blog.  One option is to wake up really early and nike-just-do-it! But for some reason, we always end up with excuses.  

“It feels lonely and alone.”  “Gym memberships are too expensive.”  “Working out at home has lots of distraction, plus the couch looks oh so comfy!”

Do these sound familiar? If you feel like you’ve tried everything there is but still can’t get yo ass up to move, try these steps to motivate yourself to workout.

1. Change your limiting beliefs.

You know that drill, YOU ALWAYS START FROM WITHIN.  If you go in with this fitness journey with a mindset of “I’ll try to do it” hoping and crossing your fingers that this will work out, you’re already setting up yourself for failure.  You must have heard of

“I was born big-boned.”

“I got it from my momma!”

“My metabolism sucks!”

“I don’t have the time.” {Click here to wake up early and make time!}

If you keep saying these things, then you will be these things.  Change it to a more positive tone like I CAN or I WILL. You won’t know your limits until you try.  And you won’t discover your capabilities until you break that barrier. 

2. Know your WHY.

It’s best to visualize, as Stephen Covey’s 2nd habit for highly effective people states, to have THE END IN MIND.  Why are you doing this?  Who are you doing this for?  Why are you aiming so hard to motivate yourself to workout?

  • Is it for your HEALTH?  
  • To LOOK GOOD?  
  • To be able to KEEP UP WITH YOUR KIDS?
  • To LIVE LONGER?
  • To be able to wear the BATHING SUIT you’ve been eyeing on?

The key to motivate yourself to workout is to have an end goal so strong that it  gives you a huge amount of pleasure when you achieve it.  Condition yourself to partner those good feelings with working out so you eventually look forward to it. 

3. Workout in fashionable workout gears.

You know, those I-just-got-done-with-my-workout-and-went-straight-to-the-grocery-stores-worthy outfits?  Those outfits so cute you wouldn’t mind getting seen in?

Everyone’s getting into fitness nowadays and the demand for workout clothes are at its highest.  There are several popup stores like Lululemon and Lorna Jane USA just to name a few.

Subscription services are also trendy right now.  Workout gears can be delivered right to your front door.  A few that stands out to mind are Fablectics by Kate Hudson. FabFitFun puts a ‘lil bit of twist to it by including some beauty and lifestyle items on top of workout stuff.  

4. Keep a fitness journal.

It’s extremely helpful to track your journey on paper or app so you can monitor your progress.   This is extremely encouraging as there would be times where you just don’t feel the change.

  • Take weekly full-body pictures.
  • Track your nutrition (old-fashioned notebook or my fave MyFitnessPal)
  • Track your workouts
  • Monitor what works for you and what you enjoy doing most

Another key idea here is PATIENCE.  You’ve gained those pounds over years of eating those hot cheetos!  You shouldn’t expect to get rid of those muffin tops after just a week of sweating it out!  

I will tell you right now that you wouldn’t see those changes right away since you see yourself everyday.  But trust me, if you workout CONSISTENTLY, change will come.  

It takes 4 weeks  to see your own body changing.

It takes 8 weeks for your friends and family to see changes.

It takes 12 weeks for the rest of the world to see your body changing.

5. Find yourself an accountability buddy.

It’s nice to have a friend to share this journey with.  It’s much more fun and you tend to stick with the regimen if someone else is into this as you are.  

  • Keep each other on check by texting each other
  • Workout together
  • Have healthy competition by placing bets (i.e. whoever doesn’t workout pays for dinner)
  • Participate on group challenges available at your local gym or online community

How to motivate yourself to workout6. Do a variety of workouts.

Working out doesn’t have to be boring.  Consistency is key when it comes to doing it.  But you do not have to stick to just one type of workout!

Here in California, we have a lot of gyms coming out with different workout fads.  I’ve tried Orange Theory Fitness which is an hour of heart rate based interval training.  It’s in a group setting which makes the very high intensity much tolerable than when you are to do it alone.  

There are PILATES and YOGA studios, CYCLE CLASS, BOOT-CAMP style training–so many options you wouldn’t run out!  Nice thing about these classes are, most of the time, you are not tied in a contract.  

Jump around and try them all out!  Most of them offer first classes for FREE!

If $$ is an issue, there’s still no excuse.  I love home workouts, and they are all over YOUTUBE.  I’ve tried the following “fitness gurus” and they are beyond awesome!

Gym Workouts: Both are in vlog format but they share a lot of their workouts and what they eat.  Very informational and inspiring!

7. Use fitness apps.

There are millions of apps out there.  Pick one that you enjoy using. Use the following list to start off with.

8. Be techy!

Take advantage of what our technology has evolved into.  Use them to make our lives more enjoyable and easier.

  • Use your mobile phones to listen to MUSIC that will surely pick your up to go through your workouts.  Put on that feel-good-rocky-balboa-music on and crush it!!! I use wireless earphones by Beats by Dre.
  • Use FITNESS TRACKERS like Fitbit or Apple Watch to help you accurately track your progress from your daily workouts, heart rates, and even sleep!

9. Hire a personal trainer.

If you have some money to spare, hiring a  COACH or TRAINER is a good idea.  They will make you get up to work, and the knowledge they have will help you on the long run.  Plus, if you’re cashing out on them, you better get up and go!

10. Surround yourself with like-minded people.

“You are the average of the 5 people you spend most of your time with.”

Hang out with people who share the same goals as you.  Getting yourself to workout is already challenging as it is.  You don’t need any more temptations in your life. And if they’re not there to support you, it’s time to say Adios!

If you need more crew to get inspired with, there are tons out there on the internet!

Follow Instagram accounts surrounding health and fitness.  They are there not only to keep themselves accountable, but to inspire those who need inspiring.

There are people who are already at the height of their fitness journey that you can look up to.  And there are those that just started whom you can relate to and join the transformation with.

11. Finally…the most exciting part…

REWARD YOURSELF!!!

Let’s face it, it’s T-O-U-G-H to motivate yourself to workout!! It takes a whole lotta DISCIPLINE and DEDICATION.  I’m rootin’ for yah.  And no one deserves a reward more than you do.

Go and treat yourself to a day at the spa for a FACIAL or MASSAGE. You should definitely treat yourself to a good meal.  Let’s not be a hypocrite. We all want those sweet scrumptious chocolate molten lava cake from Chili’s.

After all, we ONLY LIVE ONCE! Remember, the same principle applies,

YOU WILL NOT GAIN POUNDS OVERNIGHT the same way  YOU CAN’T LOSE POUNDS OVERNIGHT.

So chill, and have that cheat meal!

Let’s celebrate and enjoy the whole process.  After all, it’s more than just fitting into that nice dress or suit–it’s a LIFESTYLE CHANGE!
