As a kid, I was never fond of eating greens.  They were tasteless and had that weird texture–it’s like eating trees!  Back then, healthy green smoothie recipes didn’t exist.  When my parents forced me to eat veggies, it was torture and very traumatic, that I could still remember it up to this point.  No amount of salad dressing could cover up that plant taste.  BLECH!

Thank goodness for the discovery of blenders and juicers that makes “eating” veggies much more tolerable!  If you feel my pain, you definitely should consider blending up these leafy greens so you can make it a part of your day.  Not only is it easy, it’s very convenient for us that are always on the go!

1.  Nutrition dense and filling compacted in low calories.

Imagine a whole bag of leafy veggies like spinach or kale.  How long will it take you to consume off of those greens?

Probably a long while.  Especially when you’re not a big fan.

But when you blend or juice it, you compress all of it and its goodness down into a glass!  All of the nutrients down in one cup in which you can drink in only a few minutes.

Vegetables are also fibrous which makes it more FILLING.  And you know what this does?  It helps curb your hunger and lead you to faster WEIGHT LOSS results.

Try the following recipe to get your kids (if you have one,  or nieces, or nephews, or your neighbor’s kids!) to drink their veggies.  If kids love it, you will definitely enjoy it too!

Kid-friendly recipe:

  • 1.5 cups apple juice
  • handful kale leaves
  • 3 bananas
  • 2 cups of ice
  • Place apple juice in blender, followed by the rest of the ingredients, and BLEND!

2.  Detox

Juice detox usually involves exclusively drinking healthy green smoothie and water for several days to give your body some kind of reboot to your system and flush out all those disgusting toxins out!

Drink this healthy juice every morning and you’ll definitely notice change in these areas.  I’ve tried drinking consistently and for about 2 weeks, noticed clearer complexion.

Healthy hair recipe:

  • 4-6 large kale leaves
  • 2 ribs of celery
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1 green apple
  • 1-inch ginger root
  • 2 cups water
  • Place water in blender, followed by the rest of the ingredients, and BLEND!

Better skin recipe:

  • 1 lemon, peeled
  • 1/2 green apple
  • 1 cucumber
  • handful of kale
  • 5-8 stalks of celery
  • 1 small bunch of cilantro
  • 2 cups water
  • Place water in blender, followed by the rest of the ingredients, and BLEND!

Stronger nails recipe:

  • 4 – 5 Kale leaves
  • 2 small mangoes
  • 2 pitless apricots
  • About 30 grapes
  • 2 handful blueberries
  • 2 teaspoon chia seeds
  • 2 cups water
  • Place water in blender, followed by the rest of the ingredients, and BLEND!

3. Energy booster

What do you think of energy drinks?  Those chemically synthesized energy jolter that does the work during the first few hours of the day, then slams you down by the end of the day.

Juicing VS Blending

There are two ways you can drink up your veggies, and the following will help you choose whatever fits your liking and lifestyle: JUICING & BLENDING

The difference between the two:

  1. Blenders are usually cheaper than juicers. My fave blender is Vitamix–love it!
  2. Blenders are easier to clean.  It’s usually a 4-piece equipment which includes container, cap, base, and mini-tamper.  A very good juicer like Breville has multiple components.
  3. Blenders are easier and faster to use.  You just throw all the ingredients in and you’re good to go.  Juicers usually require just a bit more effort of placing each piece into the unit and pushing it with a “food pusher.”
  4. You get all the NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS of the fruits and veggies using a blender.  Juicers extract the food’s juices leaving the peels and fibers behind.  Blenders, on the other hand, blend the entire shebang!

Homemade VS Store-Bought

Our modern world revolves around fast.  We’re always on the go and it can be very tempting to buy those fast foods.  If you are going to grab something from a store, consider these things.

  1. Look at the nutrition label, read the ingredients, and know the nutrition facts.  
  • You should be familiar and be able to pronounce the ingredients (remember that ice cream Breyer’s commercial?)
  • Sugar content should be around 20 grams of natural sugar. (make note of natural)
  1. Cost of a store-bought juice averages $8 a pop!  It’s definitely CHEAPER to make your own.
  2. You know exactly what INGREDIENTS that go in these healthy green smoothie recipes and into your body if you make your own.

Green Smoothie Tips

  1. If you’re blending instead of juicing and want to achieve a “juicy” texture, just add more water.
  2. When blending, freeze fruits/vegetables for a thicker and more smoothie consistency.
  3. Use apples or grapes as sweetener and to break the tangy “leafy” flavor.
  4. Make BATCHES for convenience.  Make enough for about 2 days so you keep it fresh.
